All the Bollywood films that redefined LGBTQ+ love stories and visibility

Bollywood didn’t always know how to tell LGBTQ stories. For years, queer characters either didn’t show up at all or, if they did, they were just there for a joke. That’s been changing, though. Lately, even the big, crowd-pleasing Hindi movies have started telling honest LGBTQ love stories — real ones, not just another stereotype. Take these five films: ‘Margarita with a Straw’, ‘Aligarh’, ‘Kapoor & Sons’, ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’, and ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’. Each one brought something fresh. They showed everyone that love doesn’t have to look a certain way. Honestly, it’s about time.

These films are more than just two hours on a screen — they cracked open conversations India needed. They dug into acceptance, visibility, and what it means to belong somewhere. Some go deep into identity and desire. Others drop queer love right into the middle of messy family sagas. By putting real feelings and honest stories up there, Bollywood’s finally starting to change how India sees LGBTQ lives, and love itself.

Bollywood’s still evolving, but these movies are markers on the road. They remind us that every kind of love deserves its moment in the spotlight, and in our own lives, too.

‘Margarita with a Straw’ (2014)

‘Margarita with a Straw’ doesn’t bother with apologies or neat little lessons. Shonali Bose gives us Laila (a young woman with cerebral palsy) who leaves Delhi for New York, just hungry for more out of life. She wants freedom, adventure, maybe love, and she refuses to shrink herself for anyone. The film doesn’t sugarcoat anything or turn Laila into anyone’s inspiration trophy. It dives right into her sexuality, her crush on a blind woman, her doubts, and her desires. No one’s judging her, and the story never begs for your pity. Laila just lives — messy, bold, and unapologetically herself. Honestly, this film cracked something open for queer stories in India. It’s real, and it matters.

3/6

‘Aligarh’ (2015)

Hansal Mehta’s ‘Aligarh’ tells the real story of Dr. Shrinivas Siras, a professor whose life falls apart after people out him. The cruelty he faces isn’t hidden. Still, because of Manoj Bajpayee’s performance, Siras feels like a whole person, a man just trying to hold onto his dignity in a world that keeps pushing him down. ‘Aligarh’ isn’t only about pain; it’s a quiet rebellion. It demands empathy.

‘Kapoor & Sons’ (2016)

‘Kapoor & Sons’ drops LGBTQ representation right into the heart of a messy family drama. Fawad Khan’s Rahul is gay, but the film doesn’t make his sexuality the punchline or some big “shocking” reveal. Instead, Rahul fits naturally into the tangled web of family secrets and heartbreak. In this film, being gay isn’t some spectacle. It’s just life. That matters.

5/6

‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ (2019)

This one changed the game. Sonam Kapoor’s Sweety is trying to come out to her old-school Punjabi family, all while falling for Kuhu. The film doesn’t skip over the tough stuff, but it still finds space for warmth and humor. Sweety’s search for acceptance feels real, and the movie invites you to really feel what she’s going through. For a lot of people, especially for Bollywood-watchers, this was the first time they saw a lesbian love story in a mainstream Bollywood film told with so much heart.

6/6

‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’ (2020)

Sometimes, the best way to take on big issues is with a laugh. ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’ follows Kartik and Aman, two guys in love, fighting for space in a world that still doesn’t quite get them. The movie uses comedy, but it never makes fun of them. Instead, it tosses them into family chaos and uses sharp jokes to smash old stereotypes. Suddenly, LGBTQ love stories felt familiar and a lot more fun.
