Akshay Kumar is set for a rematch at the box office after a series of underwhelming performances by his recent releases including 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan', 'Mission Raniganj' and 'Selfiee'. The actor is now returning to the big screen with his latest film, 'Sarfira', a Hindi remake of the 2020 Tamil hit 'Soorarai Pottru', which starred Suriya and Aparna Balamurali.
Early reports suggest that Sarfira sold just 2,700 tickets for over 800 shows, grossing around Rs 4.8 lakh on its first day of advance bookings, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. Despite the slow start, Akshay's star power has seemingly boosted ticket sales with reports on Wednesday stating that the film saw a significant surge in bookings.
According to the latest reports, the ticket sales for the film are pushing the estimated advance collections to Rs 23.33 lakh. The film has sold around 11,878 tickets for its 3,142 shows, as per Sacnilk.com.
Including 'blocked seats', the movie's estimated earnings have reached Rs 51.92 lakh.
States such as Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, and Karnataka have led in generating the highest collections, reflecting a regional variation in audience interest.
Directed by Sudha Kongara, who also helmed the original, Sarfira features Radhika Madan, Paresh Rawal, and Seema Biswas, with a guest appearance by Suriya. The film narrates the inspiring story of Captain Gopinath, the founder of India's first low-cost airline, and his transformative impact on Indian aviation.
The original film, 'Soorarai Pottru', garnered critical acclaim and won five National Awards, including Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Film.
Scheduled for release on 12th July, 'Sarfira' will face competition from Kamal Haasan and Shankar’s 'Indian 2'. Given the subdued response to Akshay's recent films, the promotional activities for this film have been relatively low-key, featuring only a few events across the country.
