The Gateway of India is an iconic historical landmark that has stood witness to an era gone by. Here are five interesting facts we stumbled upon as part of a recent Heritage Walk in the city. The Gateway of India was erected in honour of King George V and Queen Mary’s landing at Apollo Bunder on their visit to India in 1911.
It was designed by British architect,

George Wittet

Though the plans were ready, the structure wasn't ready for the visit of the royal couple.
The design of Gateway of India was sanctioned three years later in 1914, and construction was completed in 1924.
The monument is designed in Indo Saracenic style, though it also bears influences of other architectural styles from the Muslim style
