Ten neatly framed paintings welcome you inside the art gallery of
Kerala Lalithakala Akademi
in Thiruvananthapuram. Titled
Paper Town
, the eco-friendly
art exhibition
by freelance artist
Khushi Patel
has given life to paintings made out of environmental friendly materials.
The artworks on canvas are made out of mud, ink, cow dung and charcoal mixed with water, using old newspapers as base. “Newspapers are our daily friends. After use, we stack them up and sell it to the rag pickers. As I wished to convert the newspapers into something useful, I tried to experiment them with art. Keeping various newspapers as base I created different portraits that communicated different stories to the spectators. Apart from being an artist, I am also a gardener. So being in contact with earth and cow dung is a usual affair for me,” says the artist Khushi, who is half Guajarati.
On display are paintings that convey themes like the thought process of a man, societal norms thrust on a woman and the need to think out of the box. The collections also include a self-portrait of Khushi. “It is a reflection of my feeling on over protectiveness that I receive in the society which sometimes can be annoying,” adds Khushi. The art show which concludes on May 20 is curated by her friend and art director Gokul P Dev.
