Emergency Preparedness Put to Test in Kolkata Metro Tunnel Mock Drill

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance passenger safety and emergency preparedness, Metro Railway conducted a joint evacuation mock drill inside the underground tunnel section between Jai Hind Bimanbandar and Jessore Road Metro stations on the night of May 23, after commercial operations had ended.

The exercise was carried out in collaboration with personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the West Bengal Fire & Emergency Services (WBF&ES). The drill simulated an emergency scenario, such as an earthquake or other unforeseen incident, requiring the evacuation of passengers from a stranded metro rake inside the tunnel.

During the exercise, motormen and station officials received practical training from NDRF and Fire Services personnel on emergency response procedures, including passenger evacuation, rescue coordination and immediate action protocols in the event of a crisis.

The primary objective of the drill was to assess the preparedness, alertness and response capabilities of Metro staff while also updating their skills in handling emergency situations. Such exercises are conducted periodically to ensure that all stakeholders remain equipped to respond effectively to potential incidents.

Senior officers of Metro Railway, along with staff from various departments, were present during the drill and monitored the proceedings.
