Best Actress nominees for this year's Academy Awards

With the 92nd Oscars all set to be held on 9th February 2020 (Sunday) earlier than usual in Los Angeles, California. While fans are quite excited about the same and a lot of controversies making rounds around the prestigious award in the history of world cinema, the Academy Awards has already got everyone on the edge of their seats.

Renee Zellweger - Judy

Renee Zellweger is touted as one of the strongest contenders to grab the Oscars in Los Angeles this year as she has already won the BAFTA and Golden Globes Awards for her role of Judy Garland in 'Judy'. The film which is based on the life of popular singer-actress Judy Garland is helmed by Rupert Goold. This is the third time that Renee has been nominated in the Best Actress category after 'Bridget Jone’s Diary' (2002) and 'Chicago' (2003).

Cynthia Erivo - Harriet

This is Cynthia Erivo's first-ever Academy Award nomination and she has earned it by delivering a stellar performance in Kasi Lemmons' 'Harriet' which is a biopic based on the life of Harriet Tubman. Cynthia essayed the titular character and aced it with sheer brilliance which helped her get her first-ever Oscar nomination. Meanwhile, the plot of the film revolves around Harriet Tubman, a slave who escapes the Maryland plantation and transforms into one of America’s most renowned freedom fighters. Not only that but she even motivates several others to free themselves from slavery.

Scarlett Johansson - Marriage Story

Noah Baumbach's family drama 'Marriage Story' has helped Scarlett Johansson bag her first nomination in this category at the Academy Awards. While the plot of the film which revolves around Nicole Barber and how she opts for a divorce despite having feelings for her husband and focus on her career has been hailed by the audience. Not only this but Scarlett has also been nominated for her stellar performance in 'Jojo Rabbit' as Frau Rosie Betzler in the Best Actress in a supporting role as well.

Charlize Theron - Bombshell

Charlize Theron has been nominated for her impressive performance as Meghan Kelly in 'Bombshell' in which she played a popular newscaster. The talented actress has previously won the award for her performance in 2004 film 'Monster' and this is the third time that the diva has been nominated in this category. Meanwhile, the film is helmed by Jay Roach and revolves around three women, who stand up against a powerful man who created a huge media empire.

Saoirse Ronan - Little Women

Helmed by Greta Gerwig, 'Little Women' featured Saoirse Ronan as Josephine 'Jo' March, an author with three sisters and how their experiences shaped them as adults. The coming-of-age film which is based in the late 1860s has helped Saoirse grab her third nomination in the Best Actress category after 'Brooklyn' (2016) and 'Lady Bird' (2018).
