Alec Baldwin gives his account of fatal 'Rust' shooting; insists 'I didn't pull the trigger'

Alec Baldwin said he feels incredible sadness and regret over the shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the New Mexico set of their film 'Rust'. However, he added that he did not feel 'guilt'.

“Someone is responsible for what happened, and I can’t say who that is, but it’s not me,” Baldwin said in an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos that aired Thursday night, his first in-depth on-screen interaction since the Oct. 21 shooting.

The actor was seen getting emotional while answering questions about the fatal shooting, allegedly pulling the trigger, and even saying he might have killed himself if he felt responsible for the death on the sets.

'I didn't pull the trigger'

Baldwin's sit-down interview with Stephanopoulos marks the first time the actor has spoken in-depth on-screen about the Oct. 21 shooting on the set of the film.

"I didn't pull the trigger," Baldwin said.

"I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them. Never."

Authorities have said Baldwin was told the gun was safe to handle but continue to investigate how a live round ended up in the weapon.

ABC released a clip Wednesday that shows Baldwin breaking down in tears while describing Hutchins.

It was also reported that investigators initially found 500 rounds of ammunition at the movie set on the outskirts of Santa Fe — a mix of blanks, dummy rounds and what appeared to be live rounds. Industry experts have said live rounds should never be on set. They have described "some complacency" in how weapons were handled on the 'Rust' set.

Baldwin says he might have killed himself if he felt responsible for death

Baldwin, in the interview, said he does not feel guilty for the death of Halyna Hutchins, as he did not pull the trigger.

"I feel that someone is responsible for what happened and I can't say who that is. But I know it's not me," the US actor told ABC in his first major interview since the on-set tragedy in New Mexico in October.

"I mean, I honest to God, if I felt that I was responsible, I might have killed myself," he said in the interview broadcast Thursday.

Baldwin was rehearsing a scene on the low-budget Western when the Colt .45 he was brandishing discharged a live round that struck Hutchins and director Joel Souza, who survived.

The investigation should focus on finding who brought bullets on set

The former '30 Rock' star said the criminal investigation should focus on discovering who had brought live rounds onto the set of 'Rust'.

“I’ve spoken to the sheriff’s department multiple times,” he said. I don’t have anything to hide."

"I let go of the hammer. Bang. The gun goes off," he added.

"Everyone is horrified. They're shocked. It's loud. They don't have their earplugs in... the gun was supposed to be empty. I was told I was handed an empty gun."

Baldwin said he initially thought Hutchins may have fainted or had a heart attack and was only told she had been killed with a live round hours later following a lengthy police interview.

Lawyer backs up Baldwin's assertion that he didn't pull the trigger

The assistant director who handed Alec Baldwin the prop gun that went off on the set, has backed up the actor's assertion that he did not pull the trigger. Lisa Torraco, a lawyer for assistant director David Halls, told ABC News that her client has always said Baldwin never pulled the trigger.

"He told me since day one he thought it was a misfire," Torraco said.

"Until Alec said that, it was just really hard to believe, but Dave has told me since the very first day I met him, that Alec did not pull that trigger."
