Pariah Dog

’, a touching documentary by New York-based filmmaker

Jesse Alk

has finally started its festival round in India. The documentary revolves around three people in Kolkata who religiously take care of the

stray dogs

in the city and often bullied by society. Aditi Sircar is the executive producer of the film.

As of now, ‘Pariah Dog’ is official selection at the Dharamsala International Film Festival (November 10),

Kolkata International Film Festival

(November 8 to 15), and Film Southasia in Kathmandu later in the month along with the International Short and Independent Film Festival in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which starts on December 7.

Having been shown in the United States and a few European countries, the 77-minute docu film has won some prestigious awards such as Archana Soy Audience Award for Best Feature Documentary at Tasveer South Asian Film Festival and Best Feature at

Big Sky Documentary Film Festival

in Montana. Jesse has even premiered ‘Pariah Dog’ Central Asia.

Talking about his dream project an elated Jesse says he is delighted to see the response. “A few Bengalis in the United States have seen the film and they feel the film captures something special about Kolkata.”

“Frankly speaking, I wasn’t sure about how Europeans and Americans would engage with the film; but now I’ve seen it’s really resonating with them, in that as humans, we are all on this journey to find work that makes sense while also helping the world. Many are especially touched by the fact that the people in the film don’t have a lot but still go about their day helping these dogs,” adds Jesse saying thematically ‘Pariah Dog’ also delves deep into the urban loneliness, mental health and city infrastructure issues.
