Mon Jaane Na

Story: Aamir (Yash), a contract killer who works under an underworld boss (Shataf) marries an orphan, Pari (Mimi). His life turns on its head after Pari goes missing and returns to his life two years later as a drug addict.

It's an old tale in a new package. So, Mon Jaane Na hardly has anything new to offer, except a love story that barely makes it to the watchable zone. And that's because of two factors -- relatively good performances by Yash, Mimi and Shataf (others hardly have any screen time) and a plot that's no doubt straight out of the formula book but still has something new to offer. Mimi, especially, is good as her drug addict version. She has managed to express the restlessness and trauma pretty well. Yash, though straight-faced most of the time, managed to do justice to his character, as it demanded a lack of emotions most of the time. Shataf, too, looked and acted the heartless underworld boss quite convincingly.

But the areas where the film falters are many. Makeup for one. It's odd at best to see Mimi, a bride from a 'gorib' family, look resplendent in custom branded jewellery on her wedding. Even her lehenga looks way too expensive for her poor mashi. Moreover, her flawless look, even as a drug addict, is too unrealistic. Then there's Yash. When crying, tears always flow from his right eye; the left one looks dry. Inexplicable.... Then there's that huge tattoo of what seems like Hindu mantras on his right arm. Quite a secular character he seems to be. Then there's the strange lack of continuity in this one scene when Yash pulls Mimi back into the house after she tries to leave him. When he pulls her in, all their neighbours are outside. When he comes out a couple of minutes later, all seem to have vanished. Why did they lose interest in their quarrel so suddenly?

All said and done, Mon Jaane Na is a decent watch, but not anything you would regret missing.
