Bappa explores the life of a struggling artist in his upcoming film
After earning praise for Shohorer Upokotha, inspired by a popular play by Badal Sircar, filmmaker Bappa is gearing up for the release of his next feature, Chhobiwala. The film shifts focus from social and moral decline to the struggles of survival, poverty and artistic isolation.
Written by Santanu Nath, the film follows Bishwakarma (Rahul Arunoday Banerjee), a photographer and artist whose creative vision goes unrecognised by the world around him. Considered unsuccessful in his profession, he finds himself relegated to photographing the dead while grappling with financial hardship. His wife Mala (Debleena Dutta) supports the family through factory work, balancing economic pressures with a deep sense of care and respect for her husband. As Bishwakarma retreats further into his inner world, the couple is eventually forced to confront life-altering decisions that test their relationship and their values.
The film stars Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, Debleena Dutta, Santanu Nath, Rana Basu Thakur and Rimi Deb in key roles, with Sreelekha Mitra making a special appearance.
Music plays a significant role in the narrative, with composer and lyricist SoumyaRit creating the soundtrack. The film’s songs feature an impressive line-up of singers including Rupam Islam, Somlata Acharyya Chowdhury and Jojo Mukherjee.
For the filmmaker, the title track holds particular emotional significance. Speaking about the collaboration, the director described Rupam Islam as his musical mentor and recalled growing up listening to his songs. “The person I waited hours to catch a glimpse of has sung for my film. It feels like a dream come true,” he said.
The soundtrack includes the title track sung by Rupam Islam, the romantic number Mon Bojha Ki Etoi Shohoj Bol by Somlata Acharyya Chowdhury, and Kanaghusho Khobor Achhe, rendered by Jojo Mukherjee. According to the makers, the songs are designed to complement the emotional journey of the film and add new dimensions to its storytelling.
