UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar admits Prelims 2026 was ‘tough’, reveals question sources
UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar has acknowledged that the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 was “quite tough and challenging” for many aspirants, days after the Union Public Service Commission released the provisional answer key for the exam.
In a LinkedIn post shared along with the answer key links, Kumar said the official provisional key was aimed at giving candidates “much-needed clarity”. He also revealed the sources used while preparing the answers.
“Most answers are based on standard textbooks, Government websites, Government press releases, and reputed newspapers — the core sources serious aspirants rely on,” he wrote.
The post quickly gained attention among Civil Services aspirants, many of whom had described this year’s prelims paper as lengthy, unpredictable and difficult.

The UPSC chairman also said the objection process helps maintain “transparency and fairness” in the examination system.
Candidates who appeared for CSE 2026 can submit their representations challenging the answer key, till 6 pm on May 31, through the dedicated ‘Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep)’ available at upsconline.nic.in.
All representations received from candidates will be placed before teams of subject experts for a comprehensive and meticulous review.
The final answer key will be released only after the declaration of the final result. This year, nearly 5.49 lakh candidates appeared in the CSE (Prelims).
