Visakhapatnam: The southwest monsoon set over Kerala on Thursday (June 4) and may reach Andhra Pradesh in the next three to four days, according to the IMD. The onset marks the beginning of the four-month southwest monsoon season (June-Sep), which usually reaches the state around June 1.Earlier, the IMD had predicted that the monsoon would reach Kerala on May 26. However, its arrival was delayed. The southwest monsoon arrived in the state in 2025 on May 26. This year too, the monsoon was expected in the state around June 1, but its arrival will be delayed.The weather agency forecast that rainfall during the monsoon would be around 90% of the long-period average (LPA) this year. As per the IMD, the LPA refers to the rainfall recorded in a specific region over a defined period. The LPA of seasonal rainfall over the country, based on data from 1971 to 2020, is 87 cm. If the monsoon season receives less than 90% of LPA rainfall, the IMD classifies it as deficient rainfall for the season.The IMD forecasts that Andhra Pradesh will experience mixed weather conditions for the next two to three days. Parts of the state may experience hot and humid weather conditions, while other parts of the state may witness thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and lightning.
The heat, coupled with humidity, has been making daily life uncomfortable in parts of Vizag, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Kakinada, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Konaseema, NTR, Krishna, Guntur and Palnadu districts for the past few days.As per the IMD, Nandikotkur in Nandyal district recorded 7 cm of rainfall between Wednesday Morning and Thursday morning, followed by 4 cm of rainfall in Srungavarapukota (Vizianagaram), 3 cm of rainfall each in Parvathipuram (Manyam) and Duvvur (Kadapa). Few parts of the state recorded rainfall between 1 cm and 2 cm during the period.The IMD predicts heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. Hot and Humid weather is likely at isolated places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh on June 5. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema. Gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema on June 5.
