Vijayawada: The govt has earmarked Rs 19,306 crore for the medical and health sector for 2026-27 financial year, accounting for 5.81% of the Rs 3.32 lakh crore annual budget presented by finance minister Payyavula Keshav on Saturday. The allocation to healthcare sector this year did not see a substantial increase, with an overall rise of Rs 42 crore compared to last year's proposed allocation of Rs 19,264 crore. Of the total Rs 19,306 crore, revenue expenditure is estimated at Rs 16,244 crore, while capital expenditure is pegged at Rs 3,061 crore.
Announcing the proposed allocations to the healthcare sector, Keshav said the govt inherited Rs 6,486 crore in liabilities pertaining to the health sector from the previous govt. He added that most of the liabilities were cleared by the NDA govt, strengthening the healthcare sector and restoring public confidence.

Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav said the coalition govt has initiated steps to revive the Dr NTR baby kit scheme, for which Rs 51.15 crore has been earmarked in the budget. The scheme was discontinued during the previous YSRCP govt's tenure, he added. Highlighting that there was a substantial increase in funds under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM ABHIM), he said the funds will be utilised to establish critical care block units, village health clinics, public health laboratories, and strengthening health infrastructure across the state.
