Visakhapatnam: More than 20 districts in
Andhra Pradesh recorded below normal pre-monsoon showers between March and May this year. Andhra Pradesh is likely to experience above normal heatwave days and above normal maximum temperatures during June-2026.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), from March 1 to May 31 in 2026, Andhra Pradesh recorded a rainfall of 74 mm as against the normal average rainfall of 89.4 mm, this translates into around 17 per cent deficit rainfall during the period.
Among all the districts in the state, Dr B R Ambedkar Konaseema district recorded 109 per cent above the normal rainfall during the period, followed by 49 per cent excess rainfall in Guntur district, 35 per cent excess in Sri Sathya Sai district, 21 per cent excess in Srikakulam. Visakhapatnam and Bapatla districts recorded a deficit rainfall of 64 per cent each during the period, followed by 56 per cent deficit in West Godavari, 51 per cent deficit in Nandyal , 48 per cent deficit in Palnadu and 46 per cent deficit in NTR district.
The weather agency stated that the southwest monsoon is most likely to miss its date with
Kerala on June 1 this year. As per the IMD, the normal monsoon onset date over Kerala, which marks the commencement of the season over the country, is June 1 with a likely deviation of seven days.
The southwest monsoon season (June to September) is likely to remain below normal in Andhra Pradesh along with others in the South Peninsular India, with rainfall projected at less than 94 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA).
The IMD said the conditions were favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon over to southern peninsular India, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the coming week. The weather agency forecast that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh (CAP), Yanam and Rayalaseema from June 1 to 5. Gusty winds with speed reaching 50 to 60 kmph are likely at isolated places over CAP, Yanam and Rayalaseema during the period.
The weather agency stated that between Saturday morning and Sunday morning, 6 cm of rainfal each recorded in Kondapuram (Kadapa district), Dharmavaram (Sri Sathyasai ) and Gooty ( Anantapuramu), followed by 4 cm of rainfall each in Kadiri, Chilamathur and Lepakshi (Sri Sathyasai District), Raptadu andTadpatri (Anantapuramu) and Puttur (Tirupati), 3 cm of rainfall each in Bathalapalle (Sri Sathyasai ) 3, Proddutur (Kadapa), Anantpur (Anantapur), and Parvathipuram ( Manyam).
The remaining parts in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema regions recorded rainfall between 1 cm and 2 cm during the period. Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep Islands, some parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, some more parts of southwest, west central, east central and northeast Bay of Bengal, and remaining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal during next three to four days.
