Will it be royal scion vs biz honcho for BCA top post?
Vadodara: Over a decade after former Bsecretary Jaywant Lele was ousted from the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA), the cricketing body is all set for another showdown. Two of the BCA's powerful functionaries may contest polls for the post of president on April 20. BCA vice-president (VP) and scion of royal Gaekwad family Samarjitsinh Gaekwad is inclined to contest polls for president's post that is currently held by city's top industrialist and owner of Alembic Ltd Chirayu Amin.
1x1 polls

Amin has been holding the post for last 24 years, while Gaekwad has served at various posts, including honorary secretary and VP. Gaekwad told TOI, "I am inclined to contest for the president's post. I have a crucial meeting with BCA members, including Amin, on Friday afternoon, following which I will announce my plans." Gaekwad indicated that in case Amin decides to contest for president's post, then he too will contest for the same post. TOI tried to contact Amin, but he wasn't available for comments.
Differences had cropped between Gaekwad and Amin last year over the stadium land issue. While Gaekwad was keen to speed up the process of buying the land, Amin had decided to handle the project himself. Over last six years, the association attempted to buy two different lands, but the acquisition process ran into rough weather. In fact, the association's Rs 4 crore is at stake in the Sakarda land deal made four years ago.
Sources said attempts may be made to strike compromise among the duo in the meeting on Friday. "Gaekwad has made up his mind to contest for president's post. BCA members have been upset over the undue delay in acquiring stadium land and releasing annual accounts reports. The members are looking a choice now," a BCA member said. The opposition camp has said that if Gaekwad decides to contest the polls as president, then they will support him.
A senior BCA official said, "BCA VP Sanjay Patel is planning to float his own panel for the elections and he has begun handpicking possible candidates. Though Patel will pick up both Amin and Gaekwad's men, his inclination would be towards the latter."
The current management had been instrumental in ending the long stint of Lele as BCA secretary in 2002. Lele was charged with financial irregularities and even thrown out of the association. Interestingly, now the opposition camp is making similar charges of irregularities against the current management.
