These residents set a green model
Thiruvananthapuram: A residents’ association in
Agriculture minister V S Sunil Kumar visited the farm where farming is done by members of the Kavaloor Residents Welfare Association. Sunil Kumar honoured residents’ association member N Vishwanathan Nair for giving his 80 cents of land for farming.
Residents association grew amaranthus, long beans, brinjal, snake gourd, chilly, cabbage, cauliflower, bitter gourd, tomato and pumpkin in the plot. Sunil Kumar, who inaugurated the harvest, congratulated the residents association for their initiative.
“The initiative by this residents’ association is a model and inspiration for other residents’ associations. The fruits and vegetables coming from other states have high pesticide content. We are strictly checking transportation of vegetables with high pesticide content. A solution to the high use of pesticides is growing vegetables by ourselves,” said Sunil Kumar.
“The department of agriculture development and farmers’ welfare is organizing various programmes to encourage farming. Projects are being conducted to encourage polyhouse farming in urban areas. As part of Haritha Keralam, farming, irrigation and waste management have been integrated,” added the minister
MLA K Muraleedharan delivered the keynote address and distributed saplings and organic fertilizers to the members.
Association secretary B R Shaiju said that the 80 cent plot was a rubber farm earlier. “After the rubber trees were chopped off the land was lying vacant. We approached Vishwanathan Nair with a request to allow us to do farming in the land for a period of six months. We got all technical and financial support from Kudappanakunnu krishi bhavan,” he said.
