THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The infant, who fell off an auto rickshaw on Wednesday, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.
Police said Asna (1) – the daughter of Yousuf and
Naseera of Kallambalam – sustained injuries after she was thrown out of her father’s auto around 2.30pm at Puthussery Junction. They were on their way to Parippally; Naseera and Asna was sitting in the rear seat of the rickshaw.
People who witnessed the mishap said that both Naseera and Asna were thrown off the vehicle, when Yousuf abruptly turned the auto to avoid collision with a Tata Ace pick up van that stopped at the junction right before them.
People told the police that the rickshaw was apparently speeding over permissible speed limits and hence the driver could not stop it. Thus, Yousuf was forced to turn the vehicle abruptly and the momentum forced the mother and child out of the auto.
Passers-by rushed them to the Medical College Hospital. Asna, who suffered head injuries during the fall, was admitted to the intensive care unit of SAT Hospital for Women and Children within the medical college campus. But, despite the best efforts of doctors, she succumbed to her injuries on Thursday morning. Naseera is still being treated at the medical college hospital.
The police have registered a case against Yousuf for rash driving and causing death by negligence. Asna is the only child of the couple. Her body was handed over to family for funeral after autopsy.
