THANE: The Thane police successfully destroyed 1,592.7 kilograms of seized drugs at a designated incineration facility in MIDC, Taloja, Navi Mumbai.
The destroyed contraband originated from 60 different registered cases across various police stations in Thane district. Officials confirmed that the disposal followed the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) mandated for such operations.
According to police, of the total weight of narcotics destroyed, cannabis (ganja) accounted for over 95% of the total. Around 1,552 kg of ganja was incinerated, making it the largest single drug type disposed of during the operation.
"These substances were destroyed only after obtaining specific disposal orders from the concerned courts," a senior police official stated. "In cases where trials are still pending, such disposals require court permission, which was duly obtained."
In addition to cannabis, the operation also destroyed other illegal substances including charas (hashish), brown sugar, heroin, MDMA (commonly known as MD), and various synthetic drugs seized during different operations.
The incineration process was supervised by a high-level drug disposal committee comprising senior officers from the Thane Police Commissionerate and representatives from other concerned govt agencies, in accordance with the Centre's directives.
A senior police officer said that the entire operation was conducted under strict compliance with govt guidelines to ensure complete transparency and environmental safety during the disposal process.
