SURAT: With the death of a farm labourer from Kaprada in Valsad district in New Civil Hospital (NCH), the toll due to leptospirosis in the region has climbed to four. Two more cases were reported in Navsari, taking the total number of patients to 14 this year.
Just like every year, as the first round of rain ends, the dreaded disease raises its ugly head.
Uttam Patel, 50, of Kaprada died on Friday night. State health department has started additional centres in Chikli and Vyara apart from Navsari, Valsad and Bardoli.
A city youth from Rampura area also died of the disease a few days ago. This has alerted Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) health department teams. They have conducted a survey and taken preventive action in the area.
