Shimla-Kinnaur NH’s restoration in final stage

Shimla: Cut off from the rest of Himachal for the last nine days, commuters can now heave a sigh of relief as the work to connect both ends of Shimla-Kinnaur national highway by restoring damaged portion at Nigulsari is in the last stage. Once the last blasting is over, the road is likely to be reopened by 10pm on Saturday, provided weather and the sliding hill remains supportive. Connectivity to Kinnaur had been snapped since September 7 when a massive landslide damaged about 400-metre stretch of the national highway. Revenue and horticulture minister Jagat Singh Negi, who had been camping at Nigulsari since day one, said that restoration work was almost complete and the road could be restored anytime. He said that Saturday rain delayed the restoration work. “Now, we are waiting for the last blast to take place after which both ends of the national highway will be reconnected,” he added. Negi said the road was expected to be reopened by the night as the target has been set to complete the cutting work by Saturday.

Highway closed, ropeway to move Kinnaur apples

A trial of a ropeway for transporting apple and pea crops was successfully carried out in Nigulsari, helping farmers transport their cash crops for free until the blocked road between Shimla and Kinnaur is reopened. The revenue and horticulture minister visited the site and directed officials to install a high-tech ROC machine to aid in opening the roads. The minister also ensured the transportation of essential items to the people of Kinnaur district. The restoration work of the national highway is being carried out urgently to connect the district to the mainstream.

The Himachal Pradesh government plans to install a span (ropeway) near Chhota Kamba to transport apple crops stranded on both sides of a landslide on the Shimla-Kinnaur national highway. The landslide has caused a standstill in traffic on the strategically important road that connects areas along the China border. The government aims to ensure the early transportation of perishable cash crops like apples and green peas. The restoration of the road will take time, so the installation of the span will expedite transportation.
