CM gives ₹4L each to kin of Garo Hills landslide victims

Shillong: CM Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday visited the rain-induced flood and landslide-hit Garo Hills and handed over an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased.Earlier in the day, the CM held a review meeting with the South Garo Hills district administration at Dimapara to evaluate the relief measures and inspect the damages. A total of 40 villages, across three blocks, have been damaged by the floods, affecting 2,510 people and 462 households.Seven members of a family were buried alive during a landslide that swept away their home at Atisia Songmong village.Conrad stressed on the need for flood management initiatives and survey to prevent loss of lives and property and directed officials to undertake repair works on a priority basis and ensure assistance, while assuring that the state govt will ensure restoration of road and electricity at the earliest.He also held a review meeting with the district administration of West Garo Hills and to assess the damage at Dalu C&RD block and monitor relief operations.At Dalu C&RD Block, 2,630 households have been affected, while six lives have been lost. The district administration has set up 68 relief camps. “The CM directed officials to conduct a study of rivers, water bodies and flood-prone areas for flood mitigation and undertake flood management initiatives to avoid such damages in future,” an official said.
