EC flags SIR ‘scam’: Cons threaten deletion from voter roll, seek OTPs
Raipur: Cyber fraud in Chhattisgarh is mutating fast — and its latest disguise is using the voter list revision drive in the state.
The state's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has issued an urgent advisory after cyber criminals began calling voters in the name of the Election Commission and asking for OTPs under the pretext of filling Special Intensive Revision (SIR) forms.Officials said the new pattern is simple but dangerous: fraudsters pose as election staff, claim they are helping with SIR form verification, and demand the OTP sent to the voter's phone.
If the voter hesitates, the caller threatens that the person's name will be deleted from the electoral roll. Out of fear, many share the OTP — and money is siphoned from their bank or UPI accounts within minutes. "The Election Commission's staff never asks any voter for an OTP over the phone," the CEO's office stated. "If anyone demands an OTP in the name of SIR, it is fraud. Citizens should refuse immediately and report the call to police." Officials stressed that giving a mobile number during SIR form filling is safe in itself — the risk begins only when OTPs are shared."Your caution is your security," the advisory said.
On SIR, The CEO's office said that by Nov 20, the state had completed digitisation of more than 50 lakh enumeration forms under SIR.
