Student held for harassing college mate

Pune: The Deccan Gymkhana police arrested a 21-year-old student from a city-based private engineering college on Thursday night for sending obscene texts and photographs to a fellow female student.

The victim’s mother, who is a senior government officer, lodged the complaint. She stated that the suspect had forced her daughter to send her personal photographs to him and allegedly threatened to throw acid on the victim’s face and also commit suicide. The suspect has been held under Section 354 (A) (sexual harassment), D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. Sub-inspector Rahul Kolambikar has carried out the arrest.

An officer from the Deccan Gymkhana police said that the suspect and the complainant’s daughter are pursuing engineering degree from the same college. The suspect has been sending lewd messages and obscene photographs for the past three years. “He even forced her to send personal photographs,” the officer added. Frustrated by the harassment, the victim started avoiding him. The suspect then threatened to throw acid on her face and end his own life.

“The terrified student informed her mother, who immediately approached us and lodged a complaint,” the officer said.
