Doctors also said drinks that are high in sugar could cause more harm and should be avoided.

Samiksha Chordiya, chief dietitian at Dr DY Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, said, "Instead of carbonated drinks or fruit juices, more desi drinks like taak, lassi, sugar cane juice, kokum sharbat and limbu pani (lemonade) should be included in our diet because they are also good sources of multivitamins, antioxidants and electrolytes that can help keep the body temperature stable to a large degree."

For parents struggling to get their children to drink water, city-based pediatrician Dr Pradeep Suryavanshi said, "Desi drinks are great options because they not only keep you hydrated but also provide essential nutrients. Try to keep children cool by feeding them curd rice in the afternoon once they return from school. "
