PATNA: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Sunday announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each to the next kin of four construction workers of Katihar’s Korha block who were killed in a road accident in Nagaland’s Chumoukedima district on Saturday.
He also asked Bihar's resident commissioner at Delhi Palka Sahni to talk to senior officials in Nagaland government and make arrangements for bringing the bodies of all four workers to their native village in Korha block.
The all four deceased workers had left their native village Rajjiganj under Korha block only five days ago to eke out a living by working as construction workers in Nagaland.
The deceased Bihari workers were later identified as Raghuvansh Mahto, Pankaj Kumar, Sanjay Kumar and Shiv Nandan Kumar, all in the age group of 19 to 24 years.
The four Bihari workers and one local person, total five people were killed, and three others seriously injured when a three-wheeler carrying them was hit by a truck in Nagaland’s Chumoukedima district on Saturday, a police officer of Nagaland informed Katihar district administration.
Three occupants of the three-wheeler died on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries on way to a hospital. The injured persons, including the driver of the three-wheeler, were admitted to the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research at Dimapur. Of the three injured persons, two are from Katihar.
Contacted over phone, Katihar DM Udayan Mishra told TOI on Sunday that the bodies of all four deceased workers were brought to their native village by road on two hired ambulances late Sunday evening. “Their last rites are being performed at Karhagola Ghat with the support of Katihar district administration,” Mishra said.
The DM also said that the ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each, as announced by the CM, would be handed over to their next kin on Monday. “Besides Rs two lakh, the district administration would give an additional Rs one lakh each to their families through the labour resources department,” Mishra said, adding the two injured workers of Katihar were being treated at a hospital in Dimapur.
