Munger: A polling staff, Umashankar Pandey (44) died of brain haemorrhage on Sunday morning. He was part of the team to conduct the 10th and the last phase of panchayat polls in the rural area of Haveli Kharagpur subdivision in Munger district.
A Grade IV employee of national highway division posted at Lakhisarai, Pandey was deployed as the polling officer at the primary school building in Nazri under the Haveli Kharagpur block.
Pandey had joined his assignment at the Haveli Kharagpur election office only a day before and was to proceed to the polling station on Monday morning.
Pandey was rushed to the government hospital. Its medical officer Dr Akhilesh Kumar said Pandey was brought there in an unconscious state. "I tried my best to save his life but he died soon after one hour or so in course of treatment. Pandey had suffered brain haemorrhage," said Kumar.
SDO Wasim Ahmed said Pandey was staying with his cluster and had to be moved to the polling assignment on May 30 to conduct the panchayat election. "The election commission has been apprised of the incident," said the SDO.
