Bhagalpur: Bhagalpur is all set for the regional centenary celebrations of the Patna high court on January 24, with a view to creating awareness about its rich and glorious legacy. Starting 18 April last year, the court planned year-long celebrations to commemorate 100 years of its establishment.
At least 18 Patna high court judges, including Iqbal A Ansari (acting Chief Justice), Navaniti Prasad Singh, Ramesh Kumar Datta, Samarendra Pratap Singh, Ajay Kumar Tripathi, Kishore Kumar Mandal, Ravi Ranjan, Anjana Prakash, Jyoti Saran, Birendra Prasad Verma, Rakesh Kumar, Anjana Mishra and others, are likely to attend the function which will be held on the Bihar Agricultural University premises at Sabour in Bhagalpur.
They will also participate in the opening ceremony of the Alternative Dispute Resources building of District Legal Service Autrhority on the Bhagalpur court premises. Senior lawyers, who have completed 50 years of legal practice in Munger, Banka, Khagaria, Jamui and Bhagalpur, will be felicitated by the Patna high court judges for meritorious service in the legal field. Bhagalpur district judge Arbind Madhav said, "It is a matter of honour that the regional centenary celebrations will be held in our district. A short film on the glorious history of the Patna high court will be screened and a cultural programme performed by local artistes on the occasion."
The proclamation for the establishment of the high court was made by the then governor general of India on 22 March, 1912. Viceroy and governor general Sir Charles Hardingue laid the foundation of the court building on December 1, 1913 and formally opened it on February 3, 1916. The first Chief Justice was Sir Justice Edward Maynard Des Champs Chamier.
