NH projects in Gadchiroli get boost as forest dept orders land diversion
Nagpur: The Maharashtra govt issued two separate orders diverting around 186ha forest land in Gadchiroli district for the upgrade of Gadchiroli-Allapalli-Sironcha stretch of National Highway 353C to a 2/4-lane road with paved shoulders. In the first order, the revenue and forest dept diverted just over 132ha falling within a 22-metre right of way from Zamela Nalla to Sironcha. The proposal was initially submitted by additional principal chief conservator of forests and nodal officer, and forwarded to the Union ministry of environment, forests and climate change (MoEFCC).
The integrated regional office of MoEFCC, Nagpur, granted in-principle approval on Jan 30, 2023, followed by final approval on Dec 17, 2025, after compliance with stipulated conditions.A second order diverts an additional 54ha for the stretch from Gitali-Mosam-Zamela Nalla. This diversion covers land falling within 11-metre and 22-metre right of way in Mulchera and Aheri talukas under Allapalli division. The regional office of MoEFCC, Nagpur, granted in-principle approval on Nov 21, 2023, and final approval on Dec 17, 2025.Both orders directed that the forest land be formally diverted in favour of the executive engineer, National Highway Division, Gadchiroli, subject to strict compliance with conditions laid down by the Centre. The deputy conservator of forests in Sironcha and Allapalli were tasked with ensuring fulfilment of key conditions and obtaining no-objection from Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra before handing over the land.In the past, ministers have expressed unhappiness over delay by the forest dept to grant clearances for crucial infrastructure projects, especially in Gadchiroli. In many review meetings, even CM Devendra Fadnavis has expressed this concern over delay in granting clearances for vital projects. Upgrading road infrastructure in Gadchiroli is aimed at boosting ongoing projects in the region and improving connectivity.
