Sighting of tigers on forest fringes keeps foresters on their toes

Mysuru: Though the forest department rescued a big cat in HD Kote early this week, a team of personnel continue to keep a watch on the fringes of the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, as during the operation, personnel noticed the movement of three tigers there.Camera traps installed as part of the operation, have provided images of a few tigers and a leopard, in the region where a boy was mauled to death on September 4 near Siddapura village in HD Kote taluk. Two weeks later, a tiger was tranquillized and caught near Sollepura village.The operation involving over 40 personnel, including men attached to the Special Tiger Protection Force and personnel from Hunsur range, have been continuously combing the area to scout for any other big cat in the region.Villagers of Siddapura, Kallatti, and GM Halli Haadi are worried after the incident, but some say that since they are living on the fringes of the forest, human-animal conflict is inevitable here. The situation will take a grave turn if any killing by a tiger happens, a villager said.An officer involved in the combing operation, confirmed the movement of four tigers and a leopard close to the fringes of the forest. The movement of the big cats was captured by camera traps. We are keeping a close watch on the movement of big cats, to take appropriate action, in case they come out of the forest areas, the officer said.Though a tiger was rescued, an operation has continued on the border near HD Kote, said Harshakumar Chikkanaragund, director of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve. Tigers are sighted inside the forests, he said. The recent incident of the killing of a schoolboy, has left villagers on the fringes of Nagarahole, living in fear.

Villager attacked by tiger in Nagarahole reserve

A villager in the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve in Mysuru was attacked by a tiger while grazing animals. The villager suffered head injuries and is receiving treatment at a hospital. Forest officers had warned villagers not to enter the reserve, but a group still ventured in and encountered trouble. Tiger rescued near HD Kote, kept under observation

Tiger kills 32-year-old villager in Pilibhit

A 32-year-old villager was killed by a tiger while fishing with his mother and colleague in Pilibhit district. This is the fifth human death due to tiger attacks this year. Forest authorities used a drone to investigate the incident, but the heavy rain made it difficult to determine whether it was a tiger or tigress. In other news, a villager was attacked by a tiger in Nagarahole reserve, a student was killed by a train in Pilibhit, and a doctor died of dengue in Kolkata.
