MYSORE: The heritage city could leave an imprint on the world map cutting its carbon emission with assistance from the British government.
Thanks to proactive officials, Mysore has logged British government programme to cut carbon emission in important cities across the globe. The officials are trying to factor in the needs to make Mysore green city and putting in place a master plan.
This is basically a carbon emission reduction programme that is focusing to cut the emission across the globe. Infosys presence in the city in a big way sealed the deal for Mysore since it will support the initiative extending technological assistance, sources told The Times of India.
The British deputy high commissioner Richard Hyde held discussion with the civic officials here on Wednesday on the blueprint. Corporation commissioner K S Raykar, who argued with the high commission to get the project, briefed him. MUDA commissioner P C Jayanna and additional deputy commissioner C G Betsurmath were present.
The project has two aspects: Reducing carbon emission by reducing power consumption and making the buildings energy efficient. The British high commission want these to be incorporated in the master plan so that in future, say, 20 years, Mysore is energy efficient with green buildings, sources explained. The project also aims to cut emission by means of transport. The city could well get some funds from the sponsor too. We are seeking 50 per cent but the negotiations are on, they stated. Deputy commissioner P Manivannan held meeting with the officials from the British high commission sometime back at Infosys.
The officials have been asked to make a road map to achieve the task. An official said the plan now is to make the government buildings energy efficient and so green structures by going in for use of natural light. The sponsor is seeking to gauge the seriousness of the official machinery to achieve the task set about. The funds will be decided once the blueprint is ready.
Meanwhile, the British deputy high commissioner later visited the Mysore Palace, Mysore Zoo and Asias biggest cathedral St Philomenas Church and Chamundi Hills.
