MMCRI expands ICU at KR Hospital with 15 new beds, 40 Staff
Mysuru: With the number of in-patients increasing every day, Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI) has decided to expand the ICU facility in the state-run KR Hospital. As many as 15 more beds will be added to the ICU unit. Currently, there are 30 beds in the ICU. The hospital registers 2,500 to 3,000 out-patients and 300 in-patients daily.
As the hospital has a reputation of providing quality treatment, people from Mysuru and surrounding districts visit it for tertiary care. The hospital has 1,100 beds with the presence of 25 different wards. Over 50% of the patients gets are from surrounding districts like Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Hassan and Kodagu, authorities said.
The ICU unit that functions in an old building also registered an increasing number of patients from adjoining districts of Mysuru as local hospitals were referring patients to KR Hospital due to a lack of emergency care, trauma care and specialist doctors. The ICU facility is equipped with 30 beds in an old building, witnessing 65 to 70 critical care patients.
Following an increase in patient load, workload, the management has now decided to open a 15-bed facility and recruit 40 staff on an outsourcing basis to manage it.
Speaking to TOI, superintendent of KR Hospital Dr Shobha said that the hospital authorities have made preparations to open the 15-bed emergency unit attached to its ICU facility. It planned to receive the emergency and critical care patients in the emergency receiving unit, she stated.
The hospital authorities have also floated a tender for recruitment of 40 staff needed for the emergency unit. The new emergency unit will come up by next month as preparations are going on in full swing, she added.
Dean and director of MMCRI Dr KH Dakshayini said the construction of a new OPD block in KR Hospital at the cost of Rs 75 crore is also going on in full swing. The new OPD block aims to provide permanent solutions for the increasing number of patients, she said.
