AI can help preserve languages, says Yaduveer
Mysuru: Mysore MP Yaduveer KC Wadiyar on Saturday stated that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in translating literary works is not wrong and can play a significant role in preserving and promoting languages. He was speaking after releasing the Kannada edition of writer Vikram Sampath’s ‘My Name Is Gauhar Jaan: The Life And Times of A Musician’.
Yaduveer said that the AI-enabled translation has made it possible for Kannada readers to learn about the pioneering artist in their mother tongue. “While there are concerns that AI is taking away jobs, a closer examination shows that artificial intelligence is creating numerous new opportunities. Such efforts contribute to the growth and preservation of languages,” he said.
Highlighting the transformative potential of technology, he noted that Indians are now increasingly able to write and document their own history. Referring to changes in the education sector, he said new technologies and educational advancements have the potential to bring significant changes to society.
Yaduveer stressed the importance of translating major English-language works into Kannada using AI. He said he would discuss the possibility of implementing such initiatives with the Union ministers concerned if the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, submits a proposal to the Central govt.
Speaking on the occasion, linguist Dr Narayan Kumar Choudhary of the Central Institute of Indian Languages said India’s linguistic diversity is unique in the world.
