MYSORE: The movement of heavy goods vehicles in the city centre, which has been posing problems for pedestrians and motorists, is expected to come down with the state government approving road projects to redirect traffic away from busy areas.
The government has approved two road projects worth Rs 16.5 crore to construct roads connecting the outer ring road.
This will facilitate goods vehicles to reach the ORR directly without bothering residents in north Mysore from the railway goods shed. Currently, some goods vehicles go through roads in residential layouts and this has damaged roads leading to the shed and even accidents.
Narasimharaja legislator Tanveer Sait said essential commodities like rice, wheat, sugar, cement and fertilizers which reach Mysore by railway wagons are unloaded at the goods shed from where it is taken to various districts and places by trucks. As there is no proper road connectivity, trucks take routes in residential layouts in Bannimantapa to reach ORR and then to their destinations.
This is causing inconvenience to residents and a few accidents involving heavy vehicles have been reported. The MLA claimed he had asked the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to write to the government to sanction roads from the shed to the outer ring road and he would support the projects. The government has given administrative approval for road works and this will reduce traffic congestion near residential layouts, he explained.
A Muda engineer said two projects — between the railway track near highway circle to Metagalli railway bridge in NR assembly segment and from Metagalli railway bridge to ORR in Chamaraja assembly constituency at a cost of Rs 995 lakh and Rs 660 lakh respectively — have got administrative approval and work would commence soon.
Muda SE M Shivakumar told TOI, “Work will be taken up by MUDA and soon we’ll invite tenders for it.”
