Mumbai's air quality index has remained 'very poor' the last two months. Here’s a look at why doctors are seeing a five-fold rise in patients complaining of chronic cough, upper respiratory congestion and difficulty in breathing

Manoj Singh, a resident of Mumbai’s Andheri West neighbourhood, has been incessantly coughing for the last one-and-a-half months. Despite trying various cough syrups and undergoing a full course of antibiotics, the 40-year-old found no relief. Last week, his general physician, after asking him to get a detailed lung check-up, put him on steroids as a last resort.

While Singh’s condition is extreme, it is neither unusual nor shocking. Mumbai’s top pulmonologists tell us that they are seeing a five-times rise in patients this year, compared to the last couple of years, with complaints of chronic cough, upper respiratory congestion and difficulty in breathing.
