Madurai: A seven-month-old boy was killed, and two others were injured after the car they were travelling in rammed into a roadside tree near Thirumangalam on Saturday .
Police said the infant, Viranj, was with his parents Aswath and Sowmini, residents of Telangana. Aswath hails from S Gopalapuram near Tirumangalam. The family visited a temple in Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district for a tonsuring ceremony of the infant and were returning to Sowmini’s parental home in Coimbatore on Saturday.
Police said Aswath was driving the car on the Rajapalayam–Tirumangalam national highway near T Pudhupatti when he lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and crashed into a tree. The infant, who was seated in the front with his mother, suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot.
Sowmini and a relative, Malarkodi, 65, were injured. The injured were rushed to Tirumangalam GH. Malarkodi was later referred to Govt Rajaji Hospital. The infant’s body was sent for autopsy.
The Tirumangalam taluk police registered a case and are investigating.
