Madurai: Minister for energy resources and law C T R Nirmal Kumar on Sunday launched work to lay drinking water pipelines to more than 350 houses in Thannakkan Kulam’s Vengalamurthy Nagar near Madurai under the Cauvery combined drinking water scheme. The cost is estimated to be around ₹4 lakh.
Talking to reporters, he said the ground water level in the area had gone below 1,000ft. “An inspection also found that the pipelines had been damaged for the past few months, disrupting drinking water supply.” He added that temporary arrangements have been made to supply drinking water via lorries and work to renew the old pipelines have been initiated.
District collector K J Praveen Kumar was present at the event.
Earlier in the day, the minister inaugurated a run for children in Thiruparankundram to create awareness on cleanliness. Around 1500 children participated in it.
