Kumari sexual harassment: Convict Kasi appeals verdict

Madurai: Kasi alias Suji, who was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Nagercoil mahila court in a case pertaining to sexual harassment and extortion of money from several women in 2020, preferred an appeal challenging his conviction before Madras high court on Thursday. A division bench of Justice M S Ramesh and Justice M Nirmal Kumar ordered notice to the Kanyakumari district CB-CID officials while hearing his appeal.Kasi was involved in shooting intimate videos and photographs of more than 100 young women and extorted lakhs of rupees from them in 2020. He was involved in such an act by interacting with the women on social media. The prosecution said he had exploited over 120 innocent women. Nearly 1,900 obscene photographs and 400 videos were recovered. Based on several complaints, Kanyakumari district police arrested Kasi and confiscated his mobile phones and gadgets. Subsequently, the case was transferred to CB-CID.On June 14, the Nagercoil mahila court convicted and sentenced Kasi to undergo life imprisonment. In his appeal, Kasi stated that the available evidence in the case is not sufficient to warrant a conviction. The trial court conviction was baseless. Hence, he sought to set aside the conviction and sentence imposed on him by the Nagercoil mahila court.
