Madurai: Police arrested five people and recovered gold ornaments and cash in connection with a series of theft, chain-snatching and cheating cases in Ramanathapuram district.
Six burglary cases were registered in recent days after houses in Vallabai Nagar, Muthamizh Nagar, Nammalvar Nagar and Anbu Nagar under Kenikkarai police limits were targeted. Gold ornaments, silver articles and cash were stolen in the incidents.
A special team arrested S Arjunan, 32, and S Vettaikaran, 34, in Theni district on Tuesday. During interrogation, the duo confessed to their involvement in the burglaries, police said. Officers recovered 38 sovereigns of gold and ₹1 lakh from them.
On Wednesday, the team arrested D Muneeswaran and S Karthik for allegedly snatching a 2.5-sovereign gold chain from an elderly woman near the Udachiyar Valasai bus stop. The chain was recovered.
Police also arrested P Chithiraivel, 49, of Madurai on Thursday in connection with theft of four sovereigns of gold ornaments from an elderly woman by deceiving her. All the accused were remanded in judicial custody.
