KOLKATA: A 61-year-old woman was allegedly thrashed when she plucked a flower from a neighbour's garden in Barasat on Tuesday morning.
Unable to bear the pain, Gayatri Ghoshal had to go to a doctor who removed wooden pieces that had pierced her body when neighbour Pradip Chatterjee hit her with a stick.
Ghoshal, who lives alone in her first floor flat on Barasat's RBC Road, was lured by the scent of flowers blooming in Chatterjee's house during her morning walk.

When the elderly woman allegedly tried to pluck one of them, Chatterjee came charging at her with a stick and hit her.
"I screamed out in pain but the man dragged me inside his house and again started beating me with the stick." She claimed Chatterjee ignored her repeated pleas to let her go and continued beating and abusing her.
When Chatterjee did leave her, she was too worn out to even walk to her nearby home. So, she hailed a rickshaw.
For the rest of Tuesday, Gayatri didn't tell anyone about the incident. But when her condition deteriorated on Wednesday morning, she narrated the incident to her elder brother Nabakumar Banerjee, a retired bank employee. He was the only one she could turn to for help as her son Prabir lives in Oxford while Krishna, her daughter, is in Gurgaon. Gayatri has spent most of her life in Madhya Pradesh and settled in Barasat recently.

Nabakumar took her to a doctor who found wooden pieces lodged in her body. Gayatri had to be operated on to remove the pieces.
She has lodged a complaint with Barasat police station but Chatterjee remains unrepentant. He reportedly drove out Nabakumar who tried to take up the matter with him directly.
Gayatri's brother also alleged that police have not taken action against the accused. They only received the complaint and have not yet initiated a case.
However, subdivisional police officer Nirmal Bhattacharya said, "Till now, I don't know the matter." He also assured that a probe would be initiated on the complaint.
