KOLKATA: A 34-year-old woman who had jumped in front of a Dakshineswar-bound Metro train on Sunday afternoon was saved, thanks to the alertness of the motorman, who applied emergency brakes and stopped the train right before the wheels could run over the woman lying on the tracks.
The incident happened at 3.25pm at Masterda Surya Sen station in Bansdroni.
As the suicide bid was foiled, Metro officials at the station were quick to switch off the power momentarily before RPF personnel jumped on the tracks and pulled the woman back to the platform before power was switched on and the train could leave the platform in the next two minutes. Metro services were not hampered, officials said.
Officials said upon questioning at the office of the station master, the woman told them she was trying to end her life due to some family problems.
Metro officials called her family members and alerted officers of Bansdroni PS. Her kin, who lived nearby, reached the station in the next few minutes following which Metro officials handed over the woman to her family in presence of the cops following all official formalities. The woman suffered minor injuries.
