Hotel, tourism industries hope to be treated as eco drivers
Kolkata: Travel, tourism and hotel industries hope state govt will treat tourism and hospitality as core economic drivers, backed by clear policy direction, faster approvals and funding. Industry bodies want priority infrastructure upgrades across destinations, along with single-window clearance for multiple licences, simplified fire approvals, and improvements in last-mile access.Hotel and Restaurant Association of Eastern Indiapresident Sudesh Poddar said setting up and running a hotel in Bengal requires nearly 60 licences and approvals from different departments and agencies. HRAEI, therefore, is seeking an effective single-window clearance system to simplify procedures and improve ease of doing business. It also wants the existing FAR norms reviewed, arguing they are comparatively restrictive and limit development and expansion of hospitality projects.Travel Agents Association of India chairman (east) Anjani Dhanuka said the sector needs stronger air and rail connectivity, including new international routes to key gateways like Kolkata. "We are especially keen on a direct flight to Europe," Dhanuka added.Industry bodies are also pushing for focused development of religious and heritage tourism."Govt should also create incentives for private investment in hotels, cruises, and experiences, ensuring tourism growth is sustainable and community-linked," said Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) chairman (east) Anil Punjabi."The govt has an opportunity to see tourism as catalyst for economic growth, employment, investment and cultural preservation. Evolving traveller expectations call for a refreshed and future-ready vision," said Indian Association of Tour Operators chairman (Bengal chapter) Debjit Dutta.
