‘Don’t take law into your hands’: CM appeals after attack on Abhishek
Kolkata: Three days after Trinamool MP and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was assaulted and heckled by a section of protesters in Sonarpur, CM Suvendu Adhikari on Monday appealed to the public not to take the law into their own hands."There is no need for anyone to take the law into their own hands. Have faith in the govt... For a party that has effectively been wiped out in many places and finished fourth in the Falta by-election, none should take the law into their own hands or stage protests in any manner. We know that these protests are not directly linked to political parties and are occurring out of public anger. Even then, as CM, I would appeal to the people to file complaints and allow us to take action. We are already doing so," Adhikari told reporters at Nabanna."We must ensure that such isolated incidents do not provide them with cheap publicity. It is your responsibility to see that the rule of law is established here. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita clearly lays down what can be done, and we will act accordingly," Adhikari added.Meanwhile, all five persons arrested in connection with the incident were released on bail on Monday. Baruipur SP Shubhendra Kumar said the probe was far from complete and investigators were continuing efforts to trace all those involved in the attack. Officers are examining media footage and mobile phone videos to identify others seen attacking Banerjee during the incident on Saturday evening.Senior Trinamool netas shared photographs and videos on social media alleging that BJP workers were behind the attack. "These two pelted stones at Abhishek Banerjee yesterday and are still roaming free. These are not ‘normal members of the public', these are political goons planted by BJP at every corner to disrupt and destroy," Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra posted on social media while sharing images of two men allegedly throwing stones at Banerjee.
