KOLKATA: A barge coming from Kachuberia collided with a jetty at Gangasagar on Sunday night, triggering a stampede that left two women dead and two other pilgrims seriously injured. Around 7 pm, the Rajagopalcharya, the largest barge in the Gangasagar Islands, was trying to dock at the jetty when it collided against it. The impact threw passengers off balance and some fell down.
This triggered a stampede as pilgrims started jumping off the barge in panic, and on to the jetty where the four victims lay injured.
Sixtyyear-old Bhagawati Giri, a sanyasin from Kashi's Sumati Ashram, and Ranchi's Shyam Sundari Devi (58) died on the spot. The injured ��� Savitri Devi and Vidya Devi ��� are being treated at a local hospital. Their condition is stated to be serious. Two other pilgrims died on the last day of the Mela. While a middle-aged woman from Nadia fell off a bus near Kachuberia, Rajendra Prasad Yadav (60) from Bihar suffered a heart attack, taking the toll in the Mela to 11.
