Teen who killed 2 & injured 2 by rash driving in police custody for 3 days in Kolhapur
Kolhapur: A 19-year-old accused of killing two people and injuring two others in a rash driving incident in Kolhapur city on Saturday has been remanded to three days of police custody.Police identified the accused as Mayuresh Patil (19), a resident of Lane 8, Rajarampuri. He allegedly drove an SUV into multiple two-wheelers in the Shahu Mill area, killing a man and his married daughter and injuring two others. Local residents thrashed Patil and handed him over to the police. He was arrested later that night.The deceased were identified as Deepak Vanshe (66), a resident of Dilbahar Talim area, and his daughter Bhagyashri Gawali (27), an advocate residing in Kasba Bawda. Both died on the spot. According to relatives, Vanshe was taking Bhagyashri—who was pregnant—for a medical check-up at the time of the accident.Patil was booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 105, 125(A), 125(8), 281 and 324(4), and Sections 184 and 187 of the Motor Vehicles Act. He was produced before a Kolhapur court, which granted police custody till February 10."The accused claims that some people were chasing him and, in that haste, he accidentally hit the two-wheelers.
The residents, however, claimed he was under the influence of abusive substances. We have submitted his blood samples for analysis, and the results are awaited," said inspector Satish Hodgar of Rajarampuri police station."The condition of both injured people is stable. We are in touch with the doctors treating them," Hodgar added.The victims were cremated on Sunday afternoon. Vanshe had retired from the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation's health department a decade ago.
