Kolhapur: The local crime branch of the Kolhapur police seized a truckload of Goa-made liquor being smuggled through the district, with the consignment valued at Rs 1.6 crore, on Tuesday morning. Two men have been arrested.
The police found 2,468 boxes of liquor bottles and also seized a multi-axle truck worth Rs 15 lakh. They arrested the truck driver, Santosh Petkar. Later, Asim Abdulla Sheikh, a 60-year-old from Raghunath Pura in Devas district of Madhya Pradesh, was also arrested. Police said the truck belonged to Sheikh and he was arrested by a police team sent to Madhya Pradesh.
A case was registered at the Shahuwadi police station. Inspector Sushant Chavan, of Kolhapur LCB, said, "The liquor was being smuggled through ghat areas to Malkapur, Karad and then via the highway to Madhya Pradesh."
