BJP’s Suryanvanshi elected unopposed as Sangli mayor
Kolhapur: Dheeraj Suryavanshi of Bharatiya Janata Party was elected unopposed as the mayor of Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation on Tuesday. NCP's Gajanan Magdum was elected unopposed as deputy mayor. The opposition Congress and NCP(SP) alliance did not file any nomination due to which the unopposed elections remained a formality. The BJP won 39 seats, Congress won 18, NCP won 16, Shiv Sena won 2, whereas NCP(SP) won 3 seats in the Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation elections held in January this year. BJP and NCP came together to form an alliance to come to power. On Tuesday, a special meeting was held under the chairmanship of zilla parishad chief executive officer Vishal Narwade. In this meeting, the presiding officer announced that Suryavanshi and Magdum were elected unopposed, as only 1 application was filed for both posts. After the election, the new mayor and deputy mayor were felicitated by Narwade and commissioner Satyam Gandhi. Former MP Sanjay Patil, former MLA Dinkar Patil, BJP state vice-president Shekhar Inamdar, NCP district president Nishikant Patil, city president Padmakar Jagdale, former chairman of the standing committee Suresh Awati, and Congress city district president Rajesh Naik were present at the Sangli Municipal Corporation office on the occasion.
Speaking after taking charge, mayor Dheeraj Suryavanshi said, "Priority will be given to achieving comprehensive and balanced development of the three cities of Sangli, Miraj and Kupwad. Work will be done in coordination with the administration to solve the daily problems of the citizens, including civic amenities, sanitation, water supply, roads, and health services. We will try to make the administration of Sangli Municipal Corporation more transparent, dynamic and people-oriented." KMC general body meeting on Feb 20 The first general body meeting of KMC has been called on Feb 20. The appointment of eight co-opted corporators and 37 members for the standing committee, transport, and women and child welfare will take place at the meeting. The other six subjects were also put on the agenda for the meeting.
