‘Classrooms are of utmost importance.. we need 14 more’

Kochi: The backlash against Maharaja's College administration has grown stronger after the management evicted the Maharajas College Old Students Association (MCOSA) office from the campus. Noted writer M Leelavathi, a former student of the college, on Tuesday expressed her dissent against the administration's ruling.The college administration, however, maintained their position, explaining that there are no guidelines permitting alumni association offices within the campus. They also cited the increased demand for classrooms following the implementation of four-year undergraduate programmes this academic year. "Maharaja's College is not just a collection of classrooms. The teachers who taught there and the students who graduated from there are the soul of this institution. The authorities should reflect on those historical pages," stated Leelavathi. Earlier, Justice K Sukumaran, who was an alumnus of the college, wrote to the college principal highlighting his apprehensions and indicating that the administration's decisions might contravene the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.Meanwhile, the college authorities provided clarification regarding their position. "For a college, classrooms are of utmost importance, and we need 14 more classrooms. A committee was formed to identify unused rooms and the decision to evict MCOSA was based on this report," principal Shajila Beevi said. TNN
