Moderate showers bring brief relief, City to witness sharp rise in temperature
Times News Network
Kanpur: Moderate afternoon showers in several parts of the city on Wednesday brought brief relief to residents from the prevailing heat, but the respite proved short-lived as bright sunshine later pushed humidity levels higher, leaving citizens troubled by sultry conditions.
The city recorded a marginal dip in maximum temperature, which settled at 38.4 degrees Celsius compared to 39 degrees Celsius recorded on Tuesday. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26.4 degrees Celsius. Before noon, south-eastern winds blowing at a speed of 4.1 km per hour provided some relief from the heat. However, rainfall increased humidity levels, with maximum relative humidity touching 60 percent.
The rain began around 2 pm following cloud cover over the city. The showers remained sporadic, but areas receiving rainfall witnessed sharp humidity, making weather conditions uncomfortable for residents.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast severe heat and dry weather conditions across all districts of Kanpur division during the next 24 hours till June 4, 2026. According to the forecast, some areas may witness partly cloudy skies with chances of isolated drizzle or thunderstorms during afternoon or evening hours, leading to a further rise in humidity.
The IMD predicted that Kanpur Nagar is likely to witness a sharp rise in temperature on Thursday, with maximum temperature expected between 41 and 43 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature between 30 and 31 degrees Celsius. The weather department also forecast bright sunshine during morning hours followed by light clouds and hot, dusty winds in the afternoon.
Dr Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, said that light rain and drizzle accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms are likely to continue in parts of Kanpur division during afternoon hours over the next three days. He added that temperatures are expected to rise gradually by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius during the week, increasing the possibility of intense humid heat conditions in the region.
