Raj to restructure excise dept into 53 dist units, 286 circles
Jaipur: The excise department is set for its most significant administrative restructuring in decades, with the state govt approving a new framework under the Integrated Excise Enforcement and Prevention Force.
The overhaul abolishes several long-standing posts and offices while creating a new multi-tier structure aimed at strengthening enforcement and improving administrative efficiency.
As per the revised proposal, “The traditional posts of district excise officer (DEO), circle inspector offices, preventive branch offices, assistant excise officers and conventional excise police stations will cease to exist. In their place, the department will operate through offices headed by additional commissioners, deputy commissioners and excise officers.”
Officials said the designation of district excise officer will be discontinued. Existing officers will be redesignated as deputy commissioners or excise officers based on seniority and pay scale. Eight additional commissioner zone offices will be established at the divisional level, with six positions earmarked for Rajasthan Administrative Service officers.
The new structure provides for 53 district level excise officer and deputy commissioner offices across the state, along with 286 junior excise officer offices.
“The junior offices will replace the existing excise inspector framework and will be divided into 111 Grade I and 175 Grade II units,” added official
As part of the reorganisation, the department has also aligned its administrative map with Rajasthan’s newly created revenue districts. New district level offices will be opened in Balotra, Phalodi, Salumber, Beawar, Didwana Kuchaman, Khairthal Tijara and Deeg, while Kotputli Behror already has an operational office.
The restructuring will significantly expand the department’s presence in larger districts. Jaipur will now have four district level excise offices, up from two at present. Ten other major districts, including Ajmer, Bhilwara, Bikaner, Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh, Churu, Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Jodhpur and Kota will each have two district offices.
The govt has also approved two dedicated enforcement offices for tackling illegal liquor activities and separate deputy commissioner (legal) offices in Jaipur and Jodhpur. “Fresh service rules for state and subordinate services will be framed to facilitate future recruitment under the revamped system,” said an official
A finance department official said, “The changes are intended to modernise the department, improve supervision and strengthen action against excise violations across Rajasthan.”
