200km green corridor: Teen gets new kidney

Indore: Indore-based state organ and tissue transplant organization (SOTTO) on Wednesday facilitated a kidney transplantation to give new lease of life to a 19-year-old girl by preparing a 200km long green corridor to transport the vital organ from Bhopal.
According to SOTTO officials, a 62-year-old woman, who was certified as brain dead in Bhopal's Bansal Hospital, is the donor while the recipient is an Indore-based 19-year-old girl, who was suffering from a chronic kidney disease. A green corridor was prepared between Bhopal and Indore for speedy transportation of the kidney, which was transplanted to the teen in Shalby Hospital.
“Before the transplantation, the recipient was on dialysis for the last one week,” Shalby Hospital's Dr Vivek Joshi said, adding that it took around two hours for the vital organ to reach Indore by 8am while the kidney was successfully transplanted to the patient in next four hours.
As per the information, the teen had been suffering from kidney disease for the last 11 years. Initially, according to the waiting list, multiple hospitals were called but they refused due to marginal kidney (borderline graft kidney) as the donor’s kidney has three blood vessels instead of one, which makes it a challenging case.
“A green corridor was prepared from Bhopal to Indore to transport the viral organ that has been successfully transplanted to the recipient as per the waiting list of SOTTO,” the ex-officio and MGM dean Dr Sanjay Dixit said.
